Photos of training

Below are some photos of Johnny training various dogs some at Butch Cappel's world famous dog training facility and some right here at Loyal Guard Kennels. You will notice a combination of Arm Sleeve, Leg Sleeve, Bite Suit, Hidden Sleeve and Civil work being done with an explanation of the value of each.

If you just want to see photos of Johnny working and training dogs for Personal Protection work go to the photo gallery by clicking here.

Arm Sleeve work

Sleeve work is the basics of starting a dog in personal protection work. It is similar to a boxer or martial artist using focus pads it teaches confidence and proper bite technique. However, sleeve work alone will not produce a great personal protection dog, the dog simply is not taught enough options. Here are a few photos of Johnny working various dogs with a sleeve. Notice the variety of dogs Johnny learned how to train rather then just your normal breeds such as Malinois and German Shepherds.

Above is Mischief a nice American Bulldog being worked at Butch Cappel's training facility.

Leg Sleeve

By using a leg sleeve to teach leg bites before moving up to a suit we are able to teach proper bite technique and get the dog to commit to a deeper more effective bite then if we simply started him biting on a bite suit pants.

Here is Boz a nice APBT we did some in house board and training for his owner.

And of course below is Adam doing some Leg Sleeve work.

Civil work

Civil work in personal protection training is often neglected and overlooked. The purpose of civil work is to teach the dog to target flesh and not just training equipment. This is the first stage in proofing your dog for real live personal protection training. Civil work is often neglected by trainers because it is dangerous and often misunderstood.

Below are a few examples of civil work.

Suit work

The suit is used for various reasons in personal protection and guard dog training. It is the Second stage in proofing a dog for live bites, following civil work. Suit work allows us to teach your dog multiple target areas, legs, fore arms, biceps, triceps and chest bites. Suit work allows us to teach the dog to target the weapon hand, something frowned on in sport but neccessary in real personal protection work.

These are but a few examples of what training in a bite suit allows us to teach your dog. There are many trainers out there willing to train your dog to bite a sleeve, it is quick and easy, However, it does not proof your dog for real life personal protection work.

Hidden sleeve work

Using the hidden sleeve is somewhat of a limited combination of suit and civil work. It is mainly used in scenario based training. The hidden sleeve is just that, a sleeve hidden under normal clothes so the dog thinks it is actually biting flesh when it engages.

Scenario based training

Finally one of the last things you want to do with your dog is scenario based training. This is done in public areas closely resembling the situations you are likely to actually need a personal protection dog for. This will be individualized training tailored for you and your needs.

Some examples would be at the ATM, the gas pump, walking down the sidewalk or even home invasion scenarios. The options are really governed by your needs.
